Looks like I’m going straight piped for a few days. Context after the jump.
I just cut off my exhaust 6” from the second cat. I was gonna install a glasspack with JB weld and flue tape. Welp, that idea failed miserably. My brother has a friend that lives close by and he has a welder and has welding skills. He said he’d do it for free when he gets back in town on Wednesday (but I’m gonna pay him anyway).
I have to drive as little as possible for 3 reasons:
a) The exhaust is letting out directly under the cab. I don’t want CO poisoning.
b) Its probably above the legal decible range
C) It drones like none other
I only have my 10 mile (one way) commute to work tomorrow and my 8ish mile (one way) commute to school on Tuesday. If I can help it, Im not driving for any other reason. And if I get pulled over I’ll just say my exhaust fell off and I have a new one going on Wednesday (which is a half truth).
But right now, it sounds amazing. Here’s a couple exhaust vids:

always use exhaust clamps or welding when doing exhaust.

Didnt you try to do that once upon a time?

Nice 914. Mine just devolped a vac leak God knows where so we aren’t on speaking terms until it stops being so needy. I’m checking yours out to make it jealous and convince it to come around.
To the OP, 6 inches after the cat can easily reach 500F or more, maybe way more, my ir thermometer can’t even get a read they get so hot. That’s it’s function to super heat the air and burn off anything leftover. Anything in that area that is even remotely flammable is going to go up. Uber it. You may get away with it, but you may lose your truck. At the very least carry a fire extinguisher and watch it like a hawk.

Go ahead and drive it, you’ll be fine. Hell, I’ve got a Volvo where the exhaust dumps just behind the right front wheel, and it’s been on several 600+ mile trips that way. You’ll live. If the drone is /too/ bad, earplug up.

... JB Weld isn’t even a little bit qualified to be used for exhaust work.

This is true. I cut the exhaust correctly, the cut is clean and I left plenty of pipe left. I have all the pieces of pipe needed to get it to fit and look right. I wish I gave in and realized I needed to weld

Seriously, the risk of CO poisoning is minimal, especially since you still have the cat. You’re probably still on the edge of legal, too.
You want loud, come east and drive my Volvo 740, sometime. Open headers dumping behind the right front, no cat and insane throttle response. I shot a crappy cell phone video from my porch to show off how loud it was one time, and you could hear it, over 3/4 of a mile away.

Here’s the video, too.

A friend and I were working one of the Maine winter rallies together out of her Mazda B3000 (that’s the Ranger clone with the smaller V6). We were sent to work stage finish, so we were forced to drive the entire length of the stage. Darn. Partway down, a rock or something broke her exhaust just after the header. I’m not sure if it was before or after the cat. I am sure that her V6 pickup sounded very much like a Subaru with an open exhaust - a very appropriate sound for the circumstances.

I just got under it and I realized I got it wrong. It was actually 12” from the cat, but 6” from where it starts to slope downward (my exhaust had alot of weird bends in it.) I think I am okay.

this is where you use a simple repair as an excuse to drop coin on a welder.

My old motto after wife acquisition: never accept a job to do unless you can use it to justify a new tool purchase.

Just finish the job and take the header off.

I used exhaust clamps

We’ll get along just fine.
Advanced move: justification stacking. Here’s an example: I need to do some exhaust work and therefore require a welder. I just bought a welder and it’s got a bunch of accessories and spare parts that I need to store and I therefore need new tool storage. I just bought a giant Snap-on toolbox that doesn’t fit in the garage we already have, and therefore I need to build a new detached garage.
See that? Saving a few hundred bucks at Midas got you man cave w/ a welder and a big ass toolbox.

That pipe after the cat necks down to 2 inches. The cat outlet is 2.5 inches. Cut the joint off and use 2.5 inch pipe. It’ll breathe better. Also it’s going to drone like a mofo with a glasspack.

my 914 is orange. i’ve just had that photo forever. Have you tried clamping your lines, or replacing them? I had a leak around the intake boots that was driving me nuts.
I put some hose clamps and it helped

You are a bonafide mechanical Permaculturist.
Man cave humor required (though it’s old and you’ve prolly seen it.)
